A couple of weeks ago Huffington Post publised this article I thought alignt fabulously with the mission of Vision30.

Turning 30: 30 Things Every Woman Should Have And Should Know

Turning 30: 30 Things Every Woman Should Have And Should Know By 30, you should have …

1. One old boyfriend you can imagine going back to and one who reminds you of how far you’ve come.

2. A decent piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in your family.

3. Something perfect to wear if the employer or man of your dreams wants to see you in an hour.

4. A purse, a suitcase, and an umbrella you’re not ashamed to be seen carrying.

5. A youth you’re content to move beyond.

6. A past juicy enough that you’re looking forward to retelling it in your old age.

7. The realization that you are actually going to have an old age — and some money set aside to help fund it.

8. An email address, a voice mailbox, and a bank account — all of which nobody has access to but you.

9. A résumé that is not even the slightest bit padded.

10. One friend who always makes you laugh and one who lets you cry.

11. A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra.

12. Something ridiculously expensive that you bought for yourself, just because you deserve it.

13. The belief that you deserve it.

14. A skin-care regimen, an exercise routine, and a plan for dealing with those few other facets of life that don’t get better after 30.

15. A solid start on a satisfying career, a satisfying relationship, and all those other facets of life that do get better.

By 30, you should know …

1. How to fall in love without losing yourself.

2. How you feel about having kids.

3. How to quit a job, break up with a man, and confront a friend without ruining the friendship.

4. When to try harder and when to walk away.

5. How to kiss in a way that communicates perfectly what you would and wouldn’t like to happen next.

6. The names of the secretary of state, your great-grandmothers, and the best tailor in town.

7. How to live alone, even if you don’t like to.

8. Where to go — be it your best friend’s kitchen table or a yoga mat — when your soul needs soothing.

9. That you can’t change the length of your legs, the width of your hips, or the nature of your parents.

10. That your childhood may not have been perfect, but it’s over.

11. What you would and wouldn’t do for money or love.

12. That nobody gets away with smoking, drinking, doing drugs, or not flossing for very long.

13. Who you can trust, who you can’t, and why you shouldn’t take it personally.

14. Not to apologize for something that isn’t your fault.

15. Why they say life begins at 30

Hiroshi MikitaniHiroshi Mikitani, CEO of Rakuten Inc. wrote a short piece that can be found on LinkedIn titled:

“The Fool Proof Method for Predicting Individual Success”

Read his entire article here!

He says the successful business person has three traits:

  • Drive
  • Ability
  • Knowledge

That’s a great foundation for any success in life.

I don’t care if you are trying to lose weight, save money, or have a meaningful relationship with your family, you need to:

  • Know how to do it
  • Have the ability to do it
  • Be driven to do it

Simply ask your self the following question “Am I getting the results I want?”  If not, follow that up with “Do I have the knowledge, ability, and drive to get the results I want?”

Be honest with yourself and if the results you desire are meaningful enough, you’ll do what you need to do to achieve them.  If they really aren’t that important to you, you won’t.

It’s up to each one of us to make the necessary changes to get the results we want and live the life we want to live.

What are you waiting for?

You might say I am on a bit of a Malcolm Gladwell kick.  In the past week I’ve finished two out of his three books.

Yesterday I started listening to his third book: Blink

In Blink, Gladwell talks about the significance of a concept called Priming.  Check out these two excerpts:

“Two Dutch researchers did a study in which they had groups of students answer forty-two fairly demanding questions from the board game Trivial Pursuit.  Half were asked to take five minutes beforehand to think about what it would mean to be a professor and write down everything that came to mind.  Those students got 55.6 percent of the questions right.  The other half of the students were asked to first sit and think about soccer hooligans.  They ended up getting 42.6 percent of the Trivial Pursuit questions right.  The “professor” group didn’t know more than the “soccer hooligan” group.  They weren’t smarter or more focused or more serious.  They were simply in a “smart” frame of mind, and clearly, associating themselves with the idea of something smart, like a professor, made it a lot easier – in that stressful instant after a trivia question was asked—to blurt out the right answer.  The difference between 55.6 and 42.6 percent, it should be pointed out, is enormous.  That can be the difference between passing and failing.”

“The psychologists Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson created an even more extreme version of this test, using black college students and twenty questions taken from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), the standardized test used for entry into graduate school.  When the students were asked to identify their race on a pretest questionnaire, that simple aft was sufficient to prime them with all the negative stereotypes associated with African-Americans and academic achievement—the number of items they got right was cut in half.”

In both situations the results were impacted by things that influenced the thoughts or mindset of the individuals.  They didn’t even know it.

Isn’t this kind of scary?

What this tells me is MINDSET IMPACTS RESULTS, and we can do things that impact our mindset.  We can prime our mind!

Prime Your Mind - Vision30This message probably isn’t anything new to you.  Between playing sports and my educational and professional experiences, this has been something that has been pounded in my head.  Perhaps you can relate.  The challenge I have is, if this message is so often communicated, why isn’t it used more?

Consider Gallup polls that show that 70% of our US workforce are disengaged in their positions.

Let’s think about this for a moment.  What is the mindset of someone who is disengaged?  If “mindset impacts results“, what kind of results are these employees getting for the organizations they work for?  How does this impact the rest of their lives?

What are these people doing to Prime their Minds?

Prime Your Mind

Think about the power you have to impact the results you are getting.  Consider all the things you can do to prime your mind and set you up for success?  What if you were intentional about the things you surround yourself with and pay attention to?

How would that impact each day?

How would that impact your life?

Thank you to all the brave men and women who have and continue to sacrifice their lives to protect me, my family & friends, community, and country while preserving the greatest gift any of us could ask for.

Fight for Freedom

Today is Memorial Day! A day to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  A day to remember all the people who lost their lives protecting the greatest gift any of us could ever wish for.

Freedom!

When I Google Search “Define Freedom”, the following definition comes up:

“The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.”

Over 1,000,000 people have died fighting for your right and my right to act, speak, or think as we want without hindrance or restraint.

What does this mean to you?

What does your Freedom look like?

What are you doing with this gift . . . or right . . . or power that so many people died to preserve for you and I?

What are you doing to keep it?

Each one of us is given a gift to create the life we want, but too many people never take advantage due to lack of vision, lack of focus, unproductive thoughts, bad decisions, selfishness, and laziness.

What if the 1,000,000 people who died protecting our Freedoms were unfocused, selfish, and lazy?

Today is about honoring!

The best way to honor the people who have lost their lives is by taking advantage of the Freedom they fought for and ensuring we are personally doing everything we can to make sure our families, communities, and nation stay strong and continue to honor them in the same way.

Everyone is responsible!

Be Free!

How different could our country be if everyone took advantage of their Freedom!

Your 11:20 Moment by J.Kiesau

I’m a runner!

Ok, I may have stretched the truth a bit.  I am TRYING to be a runner.  I currently run between three – five miles per day and I am training for my 2nd Tough Mudder that will take place in just a few weeks.

Just two years ago I was outwardly vocal about how much I wasn’t a runner and my common response to people who were avid runners was “You’re Crazy!”

Vision - 11:20 PrincipleThey weren’t crazy.

I was weak!

Running is a lot like everyday life.  It takes a strong mental attitude.  It’s good for you, but it’s not always fun.  It can be a painful and uncomfortable process in pursuit of a goal.  It’s really easy to give up and take an easier route.  And if you can just stay committed and bust your ass long enough for the endorphins or “runners high” to kick in, it’s easier and more productive.

Last week I was running on the treadmill at the gym.  My body was tight and my right hip flexor was irritating the heck out of me.  When I started the only thing I was thinking about was the discomfort and rationalizing with myself that if I quit, it would be OK.

Then it hit me!

My thoughts were different and the discomfort and pain was gone.  It became easier.  Endorphins had kicked in, runners high had taken over, and all of a sudden I was more relaxed and focused with what I was doing.  I looked down at the timer and it said I had been running 11 minutes and 20 seconds.

11:20

Because of my weak mind and crappy attitude, it felt a heck of a lot longer than 11 minutes and 20 seconds.  In just 11 minutes and 20 seconds I almost gave up and would not have completed the three – five miles I had committed to.  I wouldn’t have moved any closer to being prepared for the Tough Mudder.  The worst part is I had myself convinced it was OK to quit over a little discomfort.

Can you relate?

Have you ever achieved anything that didn’t come with some challenge and discomfort?  Leadership is a challenging and at times uncomfortable task.  Being a leader requires you to think for yourself and stand up for what you believe.  Sometimes you’re forced to make decisions that aren’t popular and others just don’t understand.  Those who make decisions based on their foundational passions and values are the ones who experience the “runners high”.   Because they are living true to themselves, they are confident and mentally and emotionally strong.   They will never give up, because they believe at their core in what they are doing?

What will your 11:20 look like?

Will you experience it?  Will allow unproductive thoughts and a little discomfort to convince you it’s OK to give in and quit . . . that everything will be just fine?

As a Young Professional, now is the time to jack up that speed, face the discomfort head on, and have confidence your attitude and preparation will create the momentum that will positively impact you the rest of your life.

5 Ways to Kill The Messenger!

-
Last week I was on the treadmill at the gym and I found myself irritated over ridiculous news story I was watching.  I normally don’t watch the news, but this morning my phone died, which is also my music player.  It was a reminder of how big of an impact the messages we receive can play in how we approach the world.

The average American gets hammered with over 5,000 messages per day in one form or another.  This means each one of us is having to make decision after decision after decision on what we are going to pay attention to and what we are going to ignore.

If it was only that easy!

It’s not that easy!  Sure we can say we are going to consciously make and effort to pay attention and that’s all well and good, but what about all the other stuff that our subconscious is sucking in without us even realizing it.
-

Time Square, New York City

-
We are at a disadvantage!

Most of the messages we experience aren’t coming from people we trust and sources who genuinely have our best interest in mind.  They are coming from sources who understand how we think, feel, and act more than we do.  Their number one goal is to influence you and I to do something that at the end of the day benefits them.  The tricky part is, they make us think we’re in control.

We’re not!   Yet!

The only way to win this battle is to understand your passions and values and proactively seek out information and resources that align with the person you want to be.  Being reactive puts you at the mercy of everything coming at you.

Take Control!

Here are five ways you can take control and kill all the messengers that have no interest you being confident and living fulfilled.

  1. Set Expectations
Set expectations for what type of person you want to be and what type of life you want to live.  Call it vision, goals, interests, passions… however you want to phrase it is up to you.  Once you set expectations you’ll know what you need to pay attention to and what really doesn’t matter.
    -
  2. Select Your Network
We talked about this in a previous post “Soar with the Eagles“.  You are who you hang with!  The people you roll with are a reflection of who you are and an picture of who you are trying to be.  Surround yourself with people who inspire you and cut out those that take and bring you down.  Need some help?  Read this “Removing Toxic People From Your Life
    -
  3. Read/Watch/Listen
There is so much great FREE information available right now at your finger tips on whatever topic you’re interested in.  Read blogs and articles…  watch YouTube clips or documentaries on Netflix… listen to podcasts and audio books.  Of course there is reliable and unreliable information, but you’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t.
    -
  4. Get Involved
Once you figure out your passions and values, get involved in things that align with them.  Getting involved will accomplish two things.  One: You’ll meet like minded people, which contributes to #2 above.  Two: When you focus on things you’re passionate about, the stuff that doesn’t align, doesn’t seem to matter as much.
    -
  5. Find a Mentor, Coach, or Trusted Advisor
If you haven’t yet, watch the video on the upper right of this site.  Google CEO, Eric Schmidt talks about the value of this. We all need people who want to see us succeed that will give us the good, bad, and the ugly.  Often we are our own worst enemy.  Few things are more valuable than the third-party perspective of someone we trust.
    -

Of the thousands of messages you encounter on a daily basis, how many of them align with your passions and values and are helping you live confidently and fulfilled?  If you don’t know, you need to pay attention.  If you don’t like what you discover, you need to change it!  Only you can!

Do you know what strategy is?

Do you know the difference between strategy and a tactic?

Strategy is a concept people use a lot when they talk about how they are going to accomplish something.  Most of the time they are describing tactics . . . not strategies.

Understand the difference!

Strategy is a bigger picture philosophy on how you might accomplish a goal and tactics are the actions within the philosophy that will help you reach it.

A few examples:

A weight loss strategy I have is to focus on calorie burn.  The tactics I will use will be running and kick boxing.

Because the opposing team’s run defense is weak our strategy is to run the ball 75% of the time and pass it 25% of the time.  Options, sweeps, draws, and traps are all tactics that will help us accomplish the goal.

A sales professional identifies that CEO’s of senior living organizations are a great fit for their services.  Their strategy is to focus their attention on the senior living industry.   Social media, direct mail, phone calls, and event invitations are tactics they will use to get their attention and create awareness.

Make sense?

In my experience, people don’t understand strategy, they understand tactics.  Short term success might be dependent upon tactics, but long term and sustainable success will be dependent on your strategy.

What is your strategy?

What’s your strategy to be the leader you need to be to live the life you want to live?

It’s easy to create your daily or weekly to-do list, but what are you basing that off of? What is your 2 year vision?  What do you want your life to look like when you’re 30, 35, or 40?  Most people create their daily and weekly to do list off of today’s demands rather than tomorrow’s dreams.   This is bass ackwards!

Today’s tactics must align with your vision strategy!

Inc.comThis morning I came across a great article at Inc.com that discusses this, as well has a great video talking about “Making Bold Moves”.

6 Habits of True Strategic Thinkers

  1. Anticipate
  2. Think Critically
  3. Interpret
  4. Decide
  5. Align
  6. Learn

Click here to read the article and watch the video!

We live in a quick fix, easy out, path of least resistance, and instant gratification society.  People make choices for today with little thought of tomorrow.  When you understand strategic thinking and the importance of creating a vision, everything you do will give you instant gratification because it’s more purposeful and contributes to the strategic vision for your world.

The Problem with Motivation

Because I talk a lot about leadership, personal development, and life balance, I often get asked if I do motivational speaking.  Almost as quickly as this question is asked I am ready to respond with a NO!

Motivation - Vision 30I am not a motivational speaker!

Here’s why . . .

Motivation is a temporary emotion that comes and goes.  We have an experience that provokes something within us that fires us up.  It’s an awesome explosion that will quickly fade unless one major decision is made.

That decision is commitment.

Commitment is the difference maker.
I don’t know about you, but I can get excited about a lot of things.  I’ve set a lot of goals in my days and every single one of them started because I felt motivated.  However, the only goals I’ve followed through on and achieved are the ones I committed to.

Motivation might be the spark that ignites an explosion, but commitment is what allows the fire to keep burning.

Vision 30 - CommitmentCommitment is a choice.

It’s true; commitment is a choice to be made.  It doesn’t just happen.

Don’t be that person that says “I have no motivation” or “I need to find some motivation” like it’s some wonder drug that is going to dramatically change your lives.  The problem is you haven’t made the choice to commit to whatever it is you can’t find the “motivation” to do. When you decide to commit it’s amazing how motivation is much more accessible.

If you are going to take this Personal Leadership thing seriously, you can’t half ass it.  If you are going to live the life you deserve to live, you can’t rely on motivation alone.  You must commit to your results!

Leaders commit to their results!
