5 Ways to Kill The Messenger!

Last week I was on the treadmill at the gym and I found myself irritated over ridiculous news story I was watching.  I normally don’t watch the news, but this morning my phone died, which is also my music player.  It was a reminder of how big of an impact the messages we receive can play in how we approach the world.

The average American gets hammered with over 5,000 messages per day in one form or another.  This means each one of us is having to make decision after decision after decision on what we are going to pay attention to and what we are going to ignore.

If it was only that easy!

It’s not that easy!  Sure we can say we are going to consciously make and effort to pay attention and that’s all well and good, but what about all the other stuff that our subconscious is sucking in without us even realizing it.

We are at a disadvantage!

Most of the messages we experience aren’t coming from people we trust and sources who genuinely have our best interest in mind.  They are coming from sources who understand how we think, feel, and act more than we do.  Their number one goal is to influence you and I to do something that at the end of the day benefits them.  The tricky part is, they make us think we’re in control.

We’re not!   Yet!

The only way to win this battle is to understand your passions and values and proactively seek out information and resources that align with the person you want to be.  Being reactive puts you at the mercy of everything coming at you.

Take Control!

Here are five ways you can take control and kill all the messengers that have no interest you being confident and living fulfilled.

  1. Set Expectations
    Set expectations for what type of person you want to be and what type of life you want to live.  Call it vision, goals, interests, passions… however you want to phrase it is up to you.  Once you set expectations you’ll know what you need to pay attention to and what really doesn’t matter.

  3. Read/Watch/Listen
    There is so much great FREE information available right now at your finger tips on whatever topic you’re interested in.  Read blogs and articles…  watch YouTube clips or documentaries on Netflix… listen to podcasts and audio books.  Of course there is reliable and unreliable information, but you’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t.

  4. Get Involved
    Once you figure out your passions and values, get involved in things that align with them.  Getting involved will accomplish two things.  One: You’ll meet like minded people, which contributes to #2 above.  Two: When you focus on things you’re passionate about, the stuff that doesn’t align, doesn’t seem to matter as much.

  5. Find a Mentor, Coach, or Trusted Advisor
    If you haven’t yet, watch the video on the upper right of this site.  Google CEO, Eric Schmidt talks about the value of this. We all need people who want to see us succeed that will give us the good, bad, and the ugly.  Often we are our own worst enemy.  Few things are more valuable than the third-party perspective of someone we trust.

Do you know what strategy is?

Do you know the difference between strategy and a tactic?

Strategy is a concept people use a lot when they talk about how they are going to accomplish something.  Most of the time they are describing tactics . . . not strategies.

Understand the difference!

Strategy is a bigger picture philosophy on how you might accomplish a goal and tactics are the actions within the philosophy that will help you reach it.

A few examples:

A weight loss strategy I have is to focus on calorie burn.  The tactics I will use will be running and kick boxing.

Because the opposing team’s run defense is weak our strategy is to run the ball 75% of the time and pass it 25% of the time.  Options, sweeps, draws, and traps are all tactics that will help us accomplish the goal.

A sales professional identifies that CEO’s of senior living organizations are a great fit for their services.  Their strategy is to focus their attention on the senior living industry.   Social media, direct mail, phone calls, and event invitations are tactics they will use to get their attention and create awareness.

Make sense?

In my experience, people don’t understand strategy, they understand tactics.  Short term success might be dependent upon tactics, but long term and sustainable success will be dependent on your strategy.

Another line that has stuck with me since my junior year of high school was something my football coach would say to all of his players:

 ”Fellas! You are who you hang with!”

 The point:  Your network is key!

This is a key lesson in personal and interpersonal leadership.  The people you hang with, associate with, and depend on are a large reflection of who you are and what you’re all about.

Your Passion in 3 Easy Steps

Passion is one thing leaders have in common.  It’s passion that fuels the confidence necessary to relentlessly pursue their vision and goals and keep Define Your Passionspursuing them even when times get tough.  One of the first steps in Personal Leadership is defining your passions and creating the fuel.

I’ve heard too many young adults who spent a great deal of money on school or are just two and three years in their career say:

I don’t know what I’m passionate about!

My first reaction is to say “Yes you do!”

“YES. YOU. DO!”

You may not be able to define it clearly or you might be afraid to admit it, but you know.

Three weeks ago I received an email from a gal asking me if there were any assessments she could take that would tell her what she’s passionate about.  I said I’d do some research, but in the mean time I gave her some action steps and asked her a few questions.  I asked her to make a list of every job she’s ever had.  I asked her to share three things she really enjoyed about each job and three things she hated about each job.

She answered the questions!

As I read through her responses it was quite clear what she was passionate about.

  1. She loved working with people and building relationships, whether it was with coworkers or clients.
  2. She enjoys an environment that allows her physical and mental flexibility.  She can’t be chained to a desk and she has to be allowed be creative and innovative.
  3. She loves the healthcare/wellness/fitness industry.

These are the things she’s passionate about.  These are the things that interest her and excite her about the world.

Don’t deny the obvious!

If you can’t define your passions or you’re scared to admit your them, please complete the following three steps:

  1. Make a list of every job you’ve ever had.
  2. For each position, write down three to five things that you loved about them and three to five things that you hated about them.
  3. Look for the patterns.

If something you loved about each job had something to do with working with people, taking care of people, serving people . . . guess what?  You are passionate about working with people.

If something you hated about each job was having a defined schedule and punching a time clock . . . guess what?  You need an environment that allows you schedule flexibility.

Again, don’t deny the obvious!

When you start to identify your passions and you have the courage to admit them, they will become a compass that guide your decision-making.  When you do things that align with your passions, you will experience greater fulfillment.

This world needs passionate people.  Passionate people are more engaged people and more engaged people are more productive people.

Do yourself and the rest of the world a favor and figure out what your true passions are.
