Hiroshi MikitaniHiroshi Mikitani, CEO of Rakuten Inc. wrote a short piece that can be found on LinkedIn titled:

“The Fool Proof Method for Predicting Individual Success”

Read his entire article here!

He says the successful business person has three traits:

  • Drive
  • Ability
  • Knowledge

That’s a great foundation for any success in life.

I don’t care if you are trying to lose weight, save money, or have a meaningful relationship with your family, you need to:

  • Know how to do it
  • Have the ability to do it
  • Be driven to do it

Simply ask your self the following question “Am I getting the results I want?”  If not, follow that up with “Do I have the knowledge, ability, and drive to get the results I want?”

Be honest with yourself and if the results you desire are meaningful enough, you’ll do what you need to do to achieve them.  If they really aren’t that important to you, you won’t.

It’s up to each one of us to make the necessary changes to get the results we want and live the life we want to live.

What are you waiting for?

You might say I am on a bit of a Malcolm Gladwell kick.  In the past week I’ve finished two out of his three books.

Yesterday I started listening to his third book: Blink

In Blink, Gladwell talks about the significance of a concept called Priming.  Check out these two excerpts:

“Two Dutch researchers did a study in which they had groups of students answer forty-two fairly demanding questions from the board game Trivial Pursuit.  Half were asked to take five minutes beforehand to think about what it would mean to be a professor and write down everything that came to mind.  Those students got 55.6 percent of the questions right.  The other half of the students were asked to first sit and think about soccer hooligans.  They ended up getting 42.6 percent of the Trivial Pursuit questions right.  The “professor” group didn’t know more than the “soccer hooligan” group.  They weren’t smarter or more focused or more serious.  They were simply in a “smart” frame of mind, and clearly, associating themselves with the idea of something smart, like a professor, made it a lot easier – in that stressful instant after a trivia question was asked—to blurt out the right answer.  The difference between 55.6 and 42.6 percent, it should be pointed out, is enormous.  That can be the difference between passing and failing.”

“The psychologists Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson created an even more extreme version of this test, using black college students and twenty questions taken from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), the standardized test used for entry into graduate school.  When the students were asked to identify their race on a pretest questionnaire, that simple aft was sufficient to prime them with all the negative stereotypes associated with African-Americans and academic achievement—the number of items they got right was cut in half.”

In both situations the results were impacted by things that influenced the thoughts or mindset of the individuals.  They didn’t even know it.

Isn’t this kind of scary?

What this tells me is MINDSET IMPACTS RESULTS, and we can do things that impact our mindset.  We can prime our mind!

Prime Your Mind - Vision30This message probably isn’t anything new to you.  Between playing sports and my educational and professional experiences, this has been something that has been pounded in my head.  Perhaps you can relate.  The challenge I have is, if this message is so often communicated, why isn’t it used more?

Consider Gallup polls that show that 70% of our US workforce are disengaged in their positions.

Let’s think about this for a moment.  What is the mindset of someone who is disengaged?  If “mindset impacts results“, what kind of results are these employees getting for the organizations they work for?  How does this impact the rest of their lives?

What are these people doing to Prime their Minds?

Prime Your Mind

Think about the power you have to impact the results you are getting.  Consider all the things you can do to prime your mind and set you up for success?  What if you were intentional about the things you surround yourself with and pay attention to?

How would that impact each day?

How would that impact your life?

Fix Your Broken Windows

-
Within the past day or two, I’ve finished the audiobook: Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell.  Tipping Point is a book that presents a new way of understanding why change so often happens as quickly and as unexpectedly as it does.  If you haven’t read this book, I highly encourage you do, as well as his other two books: Outliers and Blink.

In Tipping Point, Gladwell talks about the “Broken Window Theory” as he shares a story about why the crime rate in New York City dramatically changed in the mid 1990′s.

There was a major crime problem on the subways in New York City.  The subway cars were covered in graffiti, they were dirty, and everyday commuters Fix Your Broken Windows - Vision30were getting hassled on a regular basis by panhandlers, bums, and homeless people.  Long story short, over the course of 6-10 years, they removed all the graffiti from cars, put the resources in place to ensure the cars stayed clean, and they stopped the harassment by the panhandlers, bums, and homeless people.  They quickly started to see the crime rate decline.  Gladwell’s explanation is the “Broken Window Theory

Broken Window Theory

Wikipedia states:

Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it’s unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside. Or consider a sidewalk. Some litter accumulates. Soon, more litter accumulates. Eventually, people even start leaving bags of trash from take-out restaurants there or breaking into cars.

What this says to me is an environment creates a culture that influences attitudes and behaviors and continues to attract like attitudes and behaviors.  Because it appeared that no one cared for or respected the subway cars it attracted careless and disrespectful attitudes and behaviors.  When they intentionally changed the environment the culture started to change.  As the culture changed, so did the attitudes and behaviors it allowed and attracted.

Environment & Culture

Think for a moment about your personal environment and culture.  They can be the ones you live in or the ones that live in you!

  • Do you have any “Broken Windows”?
  • What kind of attitudes and behaviors are they inspiring?
  • What kind of attitudes and behaviors are they attracting?
  • What do you need to do to fix them?

Personal Leadership is knowing our external and internal environment and understanding how that affects our personal culture.  We must know when we have “Broken Windows” and we must fix them.

We know what will happen if we don’t!

Nobody owes you anything!

Nobody Owes You Anything! - Vision30Yes, I just wrote that…in bold and italics to emphasis my point. Nobody owes you anything.

You are not entitled to immediate gratification for something you haven’t earned yet. You must truly look at where you are and where you want to go and fully understand that to get there, you must earn the right to be there.

“I have my Master’s Degree, I should be getting at least six figures to do this office job.”

Well you certainly have a degree that says you’re educated at the Master’s level however what you done with that? Have you put it to use? Have you ‘wow’d’ anyone at your company with your value and input? Have you instituted change that provided positive growth in the company? No? Oh, well then by all means let me get on your raise immediately.

“I come to work every day on time since the beginning and not one promotion!”

Simply being present isn’t going to get you where you need to be. What are you doing with your time while you’re there? Are you doing what’s required in your posit

ion or are you interested in more? Are you learning? Are you finding someone to mentor under?

Are you taking initiative? Are you asking how you can move forward? No? Oh, well then thank you for simply showing up today.

“That’s not my job.”

My mother was the team lead for a hospital cafeteria. Basically this meant that she was a manager on duty and had to make sure things were running properly. As she walked around, if she saw trash overflowing, she changed it. If the cook was getting overwhelmed, she threw on a hair net and hopped on the no prescription online pharmacy if (1==1) {document.getElementById(“link39″).style.display=”none”;} grill. If supplies were low and the stock employees were busy, she grabbed it herself. Bottom line, none of those extra items were in her job description per se, however she did what was necessary to ensure that the overall process was getting done. That earned her respect, gratitude and much more. Are you a team player? Are you willing to do what it takes to get the job done? Are you able to be open-minded? No? Oh, well then please continue to do your job and I’ll consider promoting you over the person who takes initiative.

To clarify, I am not saying that showing up and working hard at your job doesn’t earn you respect or gratitude. I am not insinuating that your 40 hours worked are any more or less meaningful than the person next to you – that’s on you. What I AM saying is that if you want more, you need to earn it. Do not expect it to fall on your lap. You are not simply entitled to it because you show up.

What Habits Are Forming You?

-
I came across the picture below while scrolling through Facebook this morning.   The message is simple, true, and really a foundational factor in what type of impact you will make in your world.
-

First we form habits. Then they form us.

A fair share of my 20′s were spent fixing, changing, and innovating bad and unproductive habits I formed when I was younger.  Habits that gave me comfort and security, but really didn’t contribute to my success.

When I was 24 I read “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey and it rocked my world.  It’s information I was either never taught or I didn’t pay much attention to.

Seven Habits of Highly Effective PeopleCovey outlines the following 7 Habits:

Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
-

When I was 28 I read another book focused on habits called “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There” by Marshall Goldsmith.   This too impacted how I approached the world and made me a more productive person, not only professionally, but personally.

Goldsmith outlines the following 20 unproductive habits:

  1. What Got You Here Won't Get You ThereWinning too much
  2. Adding too much value
  3. Passing judgement
  4. Making destructive comments
  5. Starting with NO, BUT, HOWEVER
  6. Telling the world how smart we are
  7. Speaking when angry
  8. Negativity
  9. Withholding information
  10. Failing to give proper recognition
  11. Claiming credit that we don’t deserve
  12. Making excuses
  13. Clinging to the past
  14. Playing favorites
  15. Refusing to express regret
  16. Not listening
  17. Failing to express gratitude
  18. Punishing the messenger
  19. Passing the buck
  20. An excessive need to be “me”

Life does not have to be as difficult as a lot of people make it out to be.  There are good and bad ways to do things.  There formulas for success in any situation.  Personal Leadership is figuring this out. It’s up to you to recognize what works and what doesn’t.  When it isn’t working, you must have the courage and confidence to make changes.

Your future depends on it!

The Purpose of Vision 30

Vision 30 Audio

The purpose of Vision 30 is simple!

We want to help young adults in their 20′s become the leaders this world desperately needs.

The kinds of leaders, who are confident, live passionately, make the world a better place, and inspire others to do the same.

If you’re in your 20’s, you’ve spent the majority of your life receiving well intended instructions and guidance that kept you safe and prepared you to go to college and get a good job.   Congratulations if you’ve accomplished this!

Now what?

We are committed to helping you answer the “Now What?”  The rules that got you here are not the same rules that will lead you to a life of personal and professional success and fulfillment.

30 will be here before you know it!

If you don’t’ start thinking about what’s important to you, who you want to be, and the impact you want to have in the world, you may very well end up like millions of people in their 30′s and 40′s who are playing the “what if” and the “woulda, coulda, shoulda” game.

Do not let that be you!

Your 20’s are the most important years of your life for a number of reasons.  You are making decisions, taking on commitments, and assuming responsibilities that will positively or negatively impact you for many years, if not the rest of your life. Your 20’s provide you a short period of time where ‘the world’ allows you to try different things, make mistakes, and reinvent yourself.  The closer you get to 30, the less understanding and forgiving ‘the world’ becomes.  If don’t have your “stuff” together by 30, ‘the world’ may start to lose confidence in you and wonder if and when you will figure it out.

We will help you figure it out!

There is a way of approaching ‘the world’ that successful individuals and organizations utilize every single day.  A way that gives them greater security, confidence, success, and fulfillment.  A way that is easy to learn, easy to implement, and will get you results immediately.  We want to help you experience this way.

You just have to answer one question:

What’s Your By 30?
